Jina (Mahsa) Amini

Jina (Mahsa) Amini

Jîna Mahsa Aminî was a 22-year-old Kurdish woman hailing from Saqqez, a city in the Kurdistan Province of Iran. Affectionately called Jîna, which means "life" in Kurdish, her family embraced her Kurdish heritage. However, due to the Iranian state's restriction on non-Persian or non-Islamic names, she was officially known as Mahsa Amini.

Jîna was arrested by Iran's morality police, Gasht-e-Ershad, for allegedly violating hijab regulations near a Tehran metro station. She endured brutal beatings and torture while being transported in a police van to a detention center. Unfortunately, she fell into a coma and tragically passed away on September 16, after two days. At Jîna's funeral, women displayed remarkable courage by removing their hijabs, and their resounding chants of "Jin, Jiyan, Azadî" (Woman-Life-Freedom) echoed through the air, symbolizing the enduring struggle of the Kurdish people against state oppression.
